I was born in Fort Lee, Virginia, the son of a professional Army soldier. I attended school in several locations due to my father’s Army assignments, attending a German Catholic Kindergarten when my father served in Vietnam for two years. I graduated from Adolfo Camarillo High School in Southern California and enjoyed playing sports and surfing on the weekends! After high school, I attended the University of California Santa Barbara and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1983.
In the American West at the end of the 19th century, cowboys and Indians, the law of the gun where trouble was settled in a dusty street by two men, at high noon, by whoever could draw their Colt six-shooter the fastest. Fearful townspeople, hired gunslingers, marauding gangs of outlaws waylaying stagecoaches and trains, the lone sheriff with his tin star standing firm, the hanging tree. All of these images are deeply embedded in the American psyche when thinking about “how the West was won,” placed there by the uniquely American art form, the Western movie. In the film The Man Who Shot LibertyValance, these images form the backdrop of a film that is much more nuanced. This is not a movie about good vs. evil as so many Westerns are; it is about life, the inherent unfairness of it all, and how stories, real or imagined, become more important than the objective truth.
The subject of my audio track is the wonderful Salzburg Christmas Market and why it is one of the best in Europe. Salzburg is truly a very special place throughout the year but, it is even more special during Christmas. There is something for everyone.

TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO TRACK: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for listening to my podcast. The subject of today’s podcast is a 2023 Salzburg Christmas Market. The most beautiful in Austria. Salzburg is known as the city of Mozart, and in my opinion it’s also the city of Cappuccino. At the Salzburg Christmas market you can experience both. You can listen to classical Mozart while wandering around the Christmas stalls and taking a break with delicious cappuccino. Situated in front of Salzburg Cathedral with glimpses of the famous Holland Salzburg fortunes it lies above, Christmas in Salzburg is traditional, musical and magical. In the heart of Salzburg, the Christmas mark creates an authentic festive experience. You’ll be surrounded by aromas of gingerbread, warm spice wine called glue line and Hardy Austrian street food. The dates for the Salzer Christmas market are 23 November to the 1st of January 2024. Thank you for your attention.
Bring somone special to Le Petite Auberge Restaurant & Bar. This little restaurant, with about 30 tables and a small inhouse bar, is the place to enjoy a quiet evening of delicious food, wine, and spirits in a setting that is decidedly adult. While there is no formal dress code, most patrons wear business casual and linger for a long lunch or an evening at the table over their meal and after-dinner drinks.
The Heart of Darkness examines the power dynamics and morality of the time at the cusp of the 20th century. It is a strident commentary on imperialism and racism and the razor-thin difference between “civilized people” and “savages.” “Whiteness” was the currency of that time and gave license to European nations to move onto the “dark continent” and take what they wanted simply because they could. Conrad, in his examination of the true nature of mankind, forces us to examine who had the power and why and how seemingly educated, enlightened people could descend into such brutality and violence to get what they wanted. And then to ask a very uncomfortable question, is this capacity for brutality, violence, and cruelty resident in all mankind? This darkness?
“Apocalypse Now” is an epic war movie. But more than that, it is an exploration of the darkness of a man’s soul. The movie is loosely based on the book “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad, who, in 1899 used Belgian colonialism in the Congo as the backdrop to illustrate how a “civilized” man could descend into madness and brutality. The movie trades Conrad’s Belgian Congo at the turn of the 20th century for the jungles of southeast Asia where the Vietnam War was at its height in 1969. Although the venue and the epoch have changed, it is still a searing exploration of man’s inherent brutality and the darkness that inhabits the soul of mankind.

You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

Have you ever considered any real freedoms? Freedoms from the opinion of others… even the opinions of yourself?
We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats’ feet over broken glass In our dry cellar
Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion;
Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom Remember us-if at all-not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men.
This historical video provides the viewer with an understanding of the history of the Fredericksburg Hardware Store. The Fredericksburg Hardware store was a fixture of the city from 1914 to 2004. Visited by Presidents touting the value of small business and by the local population alike, the store was the heartbeat of the city for 90 years.
The location where the hardware store once stood, is now a beautiful downtown community.

KAPWING software was used for all video/audio editing. Along with the use of one of their musical selections.
For the video portion I used a Samsung Fold 5 camera
For the audio I used a head set with mike and recorded directly into KAPWING. I cleaned up the audio with KAPWING’s “clean” audio feature.

The script:
The Fredericksburg Hardware store was a fixture of the city from 1914 to 2004. Visited by Presidents touting the value of small business and by the local population alike, the store was the heartbeat of the city for 90 years.
The site is now the location of a popular restaurant and Amelia Square, a small residential community built on the block of William and Winchester streets. Walking along the old site, the stories still resonate throughout the city. The store was a place where people went to shop and to catch up on the news of the local area with neighbors and friends.
The store built relationships with its customers and kept a devoted list of clients who shopped there for decades. Speak to a native of Fredericksburg and they will tell you about being brought to the store as a child. More than just a place to pick up supplies, it was a real institution for the community.
The Fredericksburg Hardware Store may be gone, but in the hearts and minds of many who live in Fredericksburg, the business will be a fond memory to pass on to their families.
The new header design represents one of my favorite pass times: cappuccino! The new header design also shows the crest of the city of Bad Tolz in southern Bavaria.
This graphic depicts the crest of the city of Tegernsee in Southern Bavaria as its’ center motif. I selected this design as it represents a very special place for my wife and me. I spend most of my summer days with my wife enjoying the beauty of this part of the world.

The Isaris a river that flows through Southern Bavaria with its source being the Karwendel mountain range of the Alps. The Isar river enters Germany near Mittenwald and flows through Bad Tölz, Munich, and Landshut before reaching the Danube near Deggendorf. With 295 km length, it is among the longest rivers in Bavaria. It is Germany’s second most important tributary of the Danube.

The “6” in Isar6 in military parlance refers to the commander at the company, battalion, brigade and division level. I have commanded twice at the company level and once at the battalion level.
